Mario #48 Castel Trosino figs grow from medium to large size and have a drop shape. The pulp, however, can vary dramatically in figs growing on the same tree. While some of these figs might have entirely amber pulp, others contain dark red. The variation in pulp color is a characteristic of Castel Trosino, and not caused by caprification. Castel Trosino figs have a sweet honey and acidic flavor. Tasters note flavors of maple syrup and cherry. The texture is thick and jammy with a pool of honey in the center. Castel Trosino is early to mid season ripening, depending on growing conditions.
Castel Trosino is named for the small Italian town in which it was discovered. Castel Trosino is a castle that stands at the entrance to the city of Ascoli Piceno in central Italy. The post was used to protect the city from Roman invaders. This fig is also called Mario #48 because it was part of the collection of famed fig grower, Mario DiNatale. Mario was an Italian immigrant who resided in Wallingford, CT and provided invaluable information to the fig community.

When do we ship cuttings?
Non-Rooted Cuttings(November/December):
We begin to ship cuttings once the trees are dormant and in a shippable state. Exact timing is weather dependent, but we usually start in November. Shipping continues throughout the winter and early spring. We stop shipping when the trees begin to break dormancy, normally around mid-March.
**All non-rooted cuttings ship between November and March regardless of the date selected during checkout. Orders placed during our pre-sale period(October/November) will ship out first in November/December. If you are rooting your cuttings in the spring, our cuttings can be kept in the refrigerator until you are ready to root them. They will be perfectly fine. That is what we do and they've turned into our most impressive trees.
Rooted Cuttings(Spring):
We begin shipping rooted cuttings once they are mature enough to ship. The shipping period typically begins late April and continues into June. Regardless of the date you select during checkout, we will ship when ready during that span. Please do not ask for ETA's or specific arrival dates. You will receive an email when your order ships with UPS Ground tracking details.
