Garden Roses

Garden Roses and David Austin Roses

While we get requests for "garden roses" from time to time, it is important to understand what garden roses actually are and how they differ from traditional roses.  A Garden Rose is typically one that grows as an ornamental variety literally in gardens(hence the name).  Garden roses are usually not kept in stock at local florists because there is not as high of a demand.  Not to worry as we special order in varieties of garden roses on a regular basis.  These roses are great for showy bridal bouquets, luxury centerpieces or an impressive anniversary bouquet.  They can make a huge difference when comparing them to a basic rose.

Care and Handling Tips for Garden Roses

  • Cut each stem individually on an angle and insert them into a vase or bucket of clean water with flower food.
  • When using these roses in floral foam or oasis, be sure to cut the stems on an extreme angle to allow for maximum hydration.
  • Leave guard petals on unless they show signs of damage.  Guard petals are the petals on the outside edge of the rose that can appear darker, thicker or more more rugged. These are left on at the grower to help protect the interior petals of the rose.
  • Let the roses fully open before using them in floral designs, bouquets or centerpieces.  Keeping them in room temperature will help them open faster than in a refridgerator.
  • Be sure to keep the water clean by changing the water every 48 hours.

The most popular varieties of David Austin Roses

David Austin Roses are a popular brand of roses that have brought English roses into modern day designs.  We feature several of these varieties and if there is one you are interested in but do not see it here, please let us know as we are always looking into new varieties, colors and styles of garden roses.  There is always a chance we can get them just for you!

Juliet (Ausjameson)

This soft peach colored garden rose is a more modern variety that was extremely rare in the past.  To this day, it is still one of the less common varieties to see available but a popular one at that!  Considered to be one of the few true garden roses, the Juliet variety's exterior petals have a soft pastel shade to them while the inner petals reveal a more substantial peach color as you get closer to the center of the bloom.  This is a great choice for bridal bouquets as the stems are firm and strong.  Some varieties can have more slim stems which can result in premature wilting.  Not to worry with this variety though!  If you are shopping for a unique garden rose for your wedding, this is an excellent choice that has been relied upon for many years.

  • Peach color
  • Approximately 90 petals
  • Light tea scent
  • Approximate diameter is 4"
  • Averages 3.5 days to open
  • Deep cut rosette

Keira (Ausboxer)

Keira David Austin Garden Rose

Another popular choice for weddings and bridal bouquets, the Keira variety has a bit more of a vintage style to it.  While the Juliet is more of a consistent peach, the Keria variety tends to vary from pale pink to creamy white to peach.  Some brides prefer this variety for it's tendency to have darker pink edges or tips to the petals.  One bloom can even show all the varied shades.  We see this garden rose selected often for centerpieces and bridesmade bouquets.  The rippled effect of the outer petals gives the rose a unique appearance that is often seen on garden roses or cabbage roses.  These roses bloom slowly and are one of the more longer lasting varieties of David Austin roses.  This mildly scented garden rose is great for weddings but also popular as an everyday gift for birthday or anniversary.

  • Pale pink color
  • Approximately 100 petals
  • Rose scent
  • Approximate diameter is 4"
  • Averages 4 days to open
  • Cupped rosette

Patience (Auspastor)

If white is your color of choice then look no further than the Patience variety of David Austin roses.  This is by far our best selling white garden rose.  As you can see from the pictures, it is simply stunning.  The large showy rose heads have unique ruffled petals that open up beautifully.  The strong scent is fresh and uplifting as it almost has a lemon fragrance to it.  This is obviously a top choice for weddings as it makes any bridal bouquet stand out as unique.  These garden roses look great with just a simple mix of filler and greens but can be combined with other monochromatic flowers to create a stunning bouquet.  This variety is estimated to have a whopping 165 petals.

  • Buttermilk color
  • Approximately 165 petals
  • Old rose/myrrh scent
  • Approximate diameter is 5"
