    Yellow Long Neck figs have a pronounced neck that leads down to a bulbous cavity. The thick, bright yellow skin has a “perfect” quality to it, without cracking. The inside is also yellow, with some hints of red blushing amongst the pulp. This is considered a honey variety, but also has an agave flavor to it. The texture is syrupy with good seed crunch. The tree is a tall, vigorous grower with large leaves to match the equally large fruits. Make room in your garden for this super fig.

    Verdal Longue figs have yellow/green skin and grow to medium size. They are teardrop shaped with a thin skin and soft texture. Their interiors are bright red and filled with sweet and fruity pulp with a moderate berry flavor. Some have noted hints of citrus in this variety. Although they have a softer texture, cross sections of this variety will appear very neat and clean, without runny syrup. Be patient with Verdal Longue and you are sure to enjoy a wonderful tasting fig.

    Not much is currently known about Panitseika, a rare Greek fig variety. It appears to be a productive variety that puts out small figs weighing anywhere from 25-40 grams each. The trees also produce mainly 5-lobed leaves.

    What we know today is that Hative d'Argenteuil is a modest growing tree that produces mainly 5-lobed leaves and many figs. The figs have a purple exterior with hints of green coming through on some individuals. The fruits have a thick skin and a pear shape with a neck.

    The Genovese Nero AF fig originally came from Northern Italy’s Genoa region. More recently, however, avid Canadian fig grower, Adriano, brought it to North America. In fact, Adriano’s initials (AF) are included in the fig’s name to signify the distinct variety. Today, this fig is popular amongst gardeners for its vigorous growth, good resistance to splitting during rainy periods, and large, delicious figs.

    Des Roig Manyo is a Spanish fig variety that originally came from the collection of famed fig-grower, Montserrat Pons. Pons is said to have acquired this variety from the Carrossa estate, a Spanish cattle farm. The fig was named for the estate’s foreman, Roig Manyo, who discovered the variety amongst the many that grew on the farm. In fact, figs were so naturally prevalent in the area that the cows often grazed on them—what lucky heifers.

    Castelhana Preta is a Portuguese fig variety. The fig’s exterior showcases a dark, purple or black skin that can have some cracking. Inside Castelhana Preta figs is an appetizing mix of amber, brown, and light red pulp. Take a bite and you will be met with a sweet, figgy flavor. Castelhana Preta has chewy skin and a moderate seed crunch with plenty of juiciness.

    Red Lebanese BV will produce two crops annually: a breba and a main crop. The crops of small fruits are generally the size of a quarter. The figs are hardy, with good resistance to splitting and tight eyes.

  10. Grise de St Jean Fig More on the Way

    Grise de St. Jean is a French fig variety that originally came from the collection of Monsieur Baud. The variety is classified as a gray (grise) fig because the mix of yellow, purple, and green colors on the exterior can combine to give it a hazy appearance. There is slight color variation from fig to fig, with some looking more purple or yellow than others. The thin skin covers the elongated body of the fig, and you can find Grise de St. Jean growing on trees with predominately 5-lobed leaves.

    Figo Preto de Torres Novas hails from Portugal, where the mother tree is part of fig-enthusiast, Jaime’s, collection. The fig was named after the town in which it was found in the Oeste region of Portugal. Although it is still a rare fig in the US, it has recently become beloved in Portuguese cooking. The variety was even featured by a popular gastronomy tour company called “Portugal on a Plate.”

  12. De La Senyora (Sineuera) Fig More on the Way

    The De La Senyora Sineuera (S) fig is a Spanish fig variety that originally came from the collection of Montserrat Pons. The variety has a green skin with cracking throughout it and can have some striping that fades as the fruit becomes ripe on the tree. The green exterior covers a round fruit that is usually symmetrical. De La Senyora (S) produces small-medium sized figs that weight around 30-40 grams. Inside, you will find a sweet, red pulp enveloped by the thin skin.

    Curio de Bou figs originally hail from Spain where they were part of the collection of famed fig grower, Montserrat Pons. Not much is known about this variety, but it can be surmised that they were discovered in an area known as “Bou” where other similarly named figs were found.

    Do not let the name Albacor Molla Blanca fool you—this fig actually has a dark black exterior. The medium-thick skin has few imperfections as it covers the pear shaped fruit. Inside however, is where you will find the “blanca,” whitish-pink pulp that makes this variety so unique. It has a moderately sweet, figgy flavor and a chewy texture.

    Cardenillo originally hails from Spain where a lucky fig enthusiast discovered the variety. It also became part of Montserrat Pons’ fig collection, and today has been popularized in the US by fig-grower, Brian M. Cardenillo is still a rare fig variety, however, and many in the fig community are eagerly awaiting results of their first attempts at growing it.

    Burgan Unknown is a vigorous growing tree. It ripens early and will continue to fruit for a long growing season. Figs grow to medium size, usually around 40-50 grams. The figs have small eyes, which makes them more resistant to pests and splitting.

    The Rigato del Salento (PB) fig is known for its beautiful green and yellow striped skin. The skin is relatively thick and covers a small, round fruit, about the size of a quarter. Take a bite and you will find a light red or yellow delicious pulp, although color can vary slightly due to climate. This fig is often compared to a variety called Panache, which is another striped fig. However, Rigato del Salento (PB) is said to be even sweeter, with little berry flavor, and a jammy/syrupy texture. Expect PB trees to bear mostly 5 lobed leaves.

    Cotio Verdeal trees will usually bear 3-5 lobed leaves. It is a common fig variety, meaning it does not need the fig wasp to reproduce. This variety of fig has the ability to dry on the branch, so Cotio Verdeal can be enjoyed that way for a more concentrated flavor.

    It is a large yellow fig with amber colored pulp that fades into a bright red center. The thin skin coats a pear-shaped fig that has uniform tapering and no long neck. Sefrawi is known to produce a heavy crop of sweet figs.

Inside Robert’s GR you will find a juicy, sweet pulp that is full of flavor. Many have tasted fruity notes like strawberry and kiwi. And with the large figs weighing in it at 70-90 grams, there will be plenty of Robert’s GR to enjoy.

    Violeta is a rare, Portuguese fig. As the name suggests, it has a purple/black skin. The thin skin that covers the round fruits gives way to a dark red pulp. The pulp has a jammy texture and a sweet and intense berry taste.

    Socorro Black was named for a tree growing in Socorro, New Mexico. Because it is native to this warm climate, it usually fairs well when grown in containers, rather than placed directly into the ground in colder areas. It has an average cold hardiness and is a late ripening variety.

    White Madeira #1 will set both a breba and main crop. There are some differences in the two crops. The breba crop figs are larger and have a closed eye, whereas the main crop will be smaller with a slightly open eye.

    Paratjal Rimada is known as a robust grower and is especially suited to warm climates. Its trees bear one crop of round figs with uniform tapering and no neck. They are medium sized fruits that grow from the trees with mostly 5-lobed leaves.

    The LSU Tiger fig gets its name from the tiger stripes that appear on its ripe, bright purple figs. Once the tiger stripes appear, you will want to let the figs ripen on the tree until the neck is slightly shriveled for optimum flavor. When you bite into LSU Tiger, you will get a mild fruity flavor with some sweetness and not much berry flavor. The firm pulp that fills the cavity with a light red color is satisfying to bite into!

    Laradek Brown Turkey figs ripen a breba crop and main crop most years. The medium sized figs weigh around 33 grams and have a closed eye. They are teardrop shaped, but without a long neck. The plants bear 3-5 lobed leaves, and the figs themselves present a yellow-brown exterior and golden red interior. Laradek Brown Turkeys have a sweet, fruity fig taste. Consider adding this variety to your collection, especially if you are growing in a cold climate.
