Yellowstone National Park
Yellowstone is the United States’ first national park, and many believe it to be the first national park in the world. Established in 1872 under President Ulysses S. Grant, the park spans over 3,000 square miles. This vast area includes many geological features, the most famous of which is the Old Faithful geyser. Tourists gather daily to see the geyser erupt and also to explore the mountains and forests of the South Central Rockies.

Did you know that the Powder River Basin in Wyoming is the site of the country’s largest coal mine? The Black Thunder Coal Mine was opened in 1977 by ARCO, and provides approximately 8% of the United States’ coal. For a while it was surpassed in size by a nearby mine, but in 2009 it regained its title when it merged with the adjoining Jacobs Ranch Mine.
You might be asking yourself how you could incorporate the color black into a floral arrangement. Although there are no truly black flowers, there are the deep burgundy mini calla lilies and black chili berries that get you pretty close. Additionally, blooms can be designed in a black vase or ceramic container. Other accents such as ribbons, wire, silk flowers, and painted leaves or berries can add a touch of black to any design.
The Red Desert
Like the Black Thunder Mine, Wyoming’s Red Desert is an important site of natural resources. The sagebrush steppe in the center of the state contains oil, natural gas, uranium, and coal. In fact, 84% of this region is actively used by mining operations. Despite its name, the Red Desert supports lots of wildlife such as the pronghorn elk herd, various types of grasses, migratory birds, and feral horses.
