Tree Planter’s State
Nebraska earned this moniker in 1895 when homesteaders were planting hundreds on trees under the Timber Culture Act. The act entitled these settlers to 160 acres of land if they would plant 40 acres of trees and tend them for 10 years. The diligent farmers transformed what was once called “America’s desert” into an important farming region of the country.
