State Symbols

The state insect of Alabama is the Monarch Butterfly. The state officially designated this beautiful flyer as a symbol as recently as 1989. Many recognize the Monarch for its brilliant orange color, but interestingly the color serves to defend rather than attract. The butterfly is poisonous to predators since it ingests toxins from the milkweed plant. So this creature has more in common with a bright orange hazard sign than with a stunning jewel. Still, nature enthusiasts appreciate the insect’s beauty, and senders can incorporate this state symbol into a flower arrangement with:

  • Color. The butterfly’s most noticeable color is orange. Flowers that come in this bright hue include gerber daisies, roses, alstroemeria, and farm flowers such as asclepias and safflower. In fall, look for rusty orange daisy pom pons.
  • Butterfly accents. A faux butterfly accent is a sweet and cute addition to any flower bouquet. A floral designer can place orange, red, pink, purple, or blue butterflies onto a rose for a serene and ‘at rest’ look. Or, style the butterfly accent up high to simulate the creature in flight and add space and movement to an arrangement.

Another of Alabama’s symbols is the star blue quartz, which is the state gemstone. Like the state insect, this symbol was made official in the not so distant past of 1990. This rare stone is blue, can be clear to milky, and when properly cut and polished shows a star on the surface with up to 10 rays. To channel this gem, simply think ‘blue’ with blooms like delphinium, iris, bachelor buttons, and hydrangea. Or, go for sparkle by asking for blue or clear gemstones in a clear glass vase of an arrangement.

Alabama Steel and Iron

Alabama is the largest supplier f cast-iron and steel pipe products because it is the only state with all the major natural resources needed to make steel and iron. Those resources include iron ore, coal, and limestone, which have created industry in the state since the early 1900s. Today however, Alabama is also venturing into more modern materials such as titanium and carbon according to Made in Alabama. To send an arrangement with an industrial feel consider:

  • Metallic Accents. Metallic accents can be added to a flower arrangement in the form of decorative wires that swoop and swerve between blooms creating a highway for the eye to follow through the design. Or, foliage can be painted with gold, rose gold, or silver for extra shine and a modern look.
  • Stones. To signal the stones from which these metals are extracted, make river rocks a part of the flower arrangement. River rocks have natural variation in color and can beautify a flower arrangement when place in the bottom of a clear glass vase filled with water. Additionally river rocks can serve a functional purpose of anchoring flower stems into a vase, such as a stem of orchids in a tall glass cylinder.

Whether you are drawn to the softer side of Alabama with its soaring butterflies or the hard gems and natural resources present in its soil, Kremp Florist can suggest a unique and beautiful floral gift. Contact the florist today for more information about flower delivery service in Alabama.
