William and Mary College

William and Mary College is located in Williamsburg, Virginia, where it has operated continuously since its founding in 1693, making it the second oldest institution of higher education in the United States. According to Wikipedia, William and Mary taught three U.S. presidents and four signers of the Declaration of Independence among other important figures, earning itself the nickname of “the Alma Mater of the Nation.” For those interested in sending flowers to a William and Mary student, grad, or sports fan, consider:

  • Green and Gold. These are the school’s colors, and can easily be incorporated into the color scheme of a flower arrangement. Green flowers include button mums, spider mums, hypericum berries, roses, and buplerum. These blooms can then be accented by green foliage such as pittosporum, sword fern, plumosa fern, and lemon leaf. For a touch of gold, think painted gold leaves, gold berries, or a luxurious gold ribbon.
  • Ivy. William and Mary is known as one of the eight “Public Ivies” in the United States, meaning that the school offers an Ivy League experience without the hefty price tag for Virginia’s residents. Incorporating ivy into a flower arrangement can symbolize this nickname. Ivy can trail from a Victorian style flower arrangement designed in a footed bowl, or from a large, showy vase arrangement of hydrangeas and lilies.

Arlington National Cemetery

Another well-known Virginia landmark is Arlington National Cemetery, which covers over 600 acres and is the resting place of approximately 300,000 veterans from the Revolutionary War to the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts, according to the National Park Service. Whether visiting this historic cemetery, or any Virginia resting place, you can honor deceased loved ones with flowers by choosing:

  • Cemetery Flowers. Cemetery flowers can be designed in a container that will attach firmly to the ground. Most commonly designed in a triangular shape, floral designers can use seasonal blooms or a symbolic color scheme such as red, white, and blue. Flowers suitable to withstanding the outdoors include carnations, daisy pom pons, alstroemeria, and chrysanthemums. These flower arrangements are a heartfelt adornment to graves and a comfort to family members to show their love for the deceased.
  • Grave Blankets. Grave blankets are available during wintertime when the weather in Virginia is disagreeable to fresh cut flowers. Grave blankets feature evergreens such as Douglas fir, pine, cedar and holly that can withstand the elements. These greens are often accented with ribbons, pinecones, birch branches, and even holiday accents such as ornaments and permanent poinsettias.

Virginians can rely on Kremp Florist’s flower delivery service whether the occasion be a joyous academic celebration or a more somber memorial. Call the florist today to speak to an associate about your next flower delivery, or order online.
