City of Roses

Portland is known as the City of Roses because many varieties of roses were grown there dating back prior to World War I. The marine climate, warm summers, mild winters, and clay soils make the state an ideal location to grow roses. That is why a 4.5-acre sanctuary called the International Rose Test Garden was planted there in 1917 to preserve European rose varieties during the war.
