Hawaii’s Eight Islands

Hawaii comprises eight main islands, each with its own unique community. Each island has its own plant or shell and color to celebrate its individuality. Consider sending flower arrangements representative of one of Hawaii’s islands with the following symbols:

  • Niihau. This island holds the Pupu Shell as its symbol and its color is white. These small and delicate shells are often made into necklaces or bracelets. They could be placed inside the vase of a flower arrangement with beads and rocks to recreate a Hawaii beach. Just add water! There are many blooms that come in white, such as: roses, hydrangea, daisy pom pons, lisianthus, and alstroemeria.
  • Kauai. The Mokihana (green berry) is the symbol of Kauai and its color is purple. Green hypericum berries will allow you to incorporate this symbol into an arrangement or the more rare berzelia berry in the Protea family will give arrangements a unique touch. As for purple blooms, flower shops may carry roses, stock, alstroemeria, gladiolas, and tulips.
  • Oahu. Oahu has the Ilima flower as its symbol and its color is yellow. The Ilima flower is a small yellow flower, and it is sometimes made into Hawaiian leis. While this bloom is not likely to be seen in flower shops, consider other yellow-colored petals such as daffodils, lilies, tulips, solidago, chrysanthemums, or daisy pompons.
  • Maui. The Lokelani, or Pink Cottage Rose, is the symbol of Maui and the color is pink. This many-petaled rose is akin to a beautiful garden rose and it comes in a rich pink hue. There are many types of roses available including the coveted David Austin brand garden roses. Some other pink rose varieties include Esther, Sahara, Sweet Unique, Esperance, and Pink Floyd.
  • Molokai. The White Kukui Blossom stands for Molokai and the island’s color is green. Although the Kukui Blossom is unlikely to be found as a fresh cut flower, a similar flowering shrub would be a white lilac, though it may be equally as seasonal and rare. Green blooms, however, are abundant to symbolize Molokai and include: trachelium, hypericum berries, roses, alstroemeria, and green button mums.
  • Lanai. The Kaunaoa, a yellow and orange air plant, represents Lanai and the island’s color is orange. This plant features mossy tendrils, so an air plant or succulent accented by Spanish moss or coconut bark would make a fitting gift symbolic of Lanai. Little maintenance is a bonus for the recipient!
  • Kahoolawe. Kahoolawe is represented by the Hinahina, or Beach Heliotrope, and the color is gray. These are gray-ish toned succulent plants, that are a great choice for flower delivery for any occasion. Planted in clusters in a low container, this is a modern and chic gift.
  • Big Island of Hawaii. The Big Island’s symbol is the Lehua Ohia and its color is red. This flower is showy with a spiky-looking red plume at the top. Similar flowers would include pin-cushion protea or safflower.
