Missouri, however, also bears another nickname whose origins are attributed to Congressman Willard Duncan Vandiver. In an 1899 speech in Philadelphia, Vandiver reportedly said, "I come from a state that raises corn and cotton and cockleburs and Democrats, and frothy eloquence neither convinces nor satisfies me. If the flowers are going to an office it’s a nice idea to send an arrangement that is already designed in a vase so that the recipient does not have to arrange the flowers at work. On the other hand, if you know of a friend with a fine crystal collection, send a wrapped bouquet that she can display proudly in one of her own vases.
